Common Questions
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a solution of naturally derived acids, antioxidants, and moisturizers, including trichloroacetic acid (TCA), phenol, salicylic acid, vitamin C, and tretinoin. These penetrate varying skin depths to stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin, remove damaged skin cells, and treat wrinkles, dark spots, and more. After a few days, the dead skin dissolves, revealing new, smooth skin and a more even skin tone.
What should I expect after my treatment?
Your clinician will give you specific instructions following your peel, but here is a breakdown of what to expect.
Immediately after treatment: You will leave your appointment with the peel still on for the next 4-6 hours. It would help if you remembered this when scheduling your treatment — choose when you'll be able to take plenty of time for yourself.
4-6 hours after treatment: You'll wash off the peel using a mild cleanser and water. Be sure to do this at least an hour before bed.
2-5 days after treatment: Skin turnover begins. As the peel boosts the production of new, rejuvenated skin, the dead skin will gradually break down and peel away. Be sure to use moisturizer and SPF frequently throughout the recovery process.
6-7 days after treatment: The peeling will gradually ease. Once it stops, you'll notice a fresh, glowing appearance that may continue to improve over the next few weeks.

Please note: You must avoid direct sun exposure for 7-10 days after the treatment.
How long do results last?
Results begin to appear within 7 days, and improvements will continue over the following 4-6 weeks. After that, the results can last 2-4 months after one peel, or they’ll last for 6 months or more with repeated treatments.
What are possible side effects?
Chemical peels are generally well tolerated. You could experience pigmentation changes, with skin patches turning darker or lighter. While chemical peels are suitable for all skin types and skin colors, people with darker skin tones are more likely to see these changes. To help reduce this risk, you could avoid exercising or sweating for 3-4 days after treatment. Your Modern Age clinician can also help advise how to best avoid complications.
Other side effects include redness, swelling, blistering, itchiness, burning, dryness, allergic reaction, or infection. A rare side effect is scarring. Be sure to avoid picking at the skin to prevent this from happening.
