Product Information

Who it's for
Women experiencing female pattern hair loss, also called androgenic alopecia, can benefit from spironolactone. It's especially helpful for women whose hair loss starts before menopause.
Benefits
  • Improved hair thickness and fullness

  • Reduced hair loss

  • What to expect
    Results:
  • When it comes to regrowing hair, patience is key. Because hair only grows at a rate of half an inch per month, most people need to take Spironolactone for at least 6 months before they start seeing results.

  • Your Modern Age clinician will work closely with you to monitor your results, adjusting your dosage as needed.

  • Downsides:
Spironolactone is generally well tolerated and has mild side effects, which include:
  • Dizziness and lightheadedness

  • Breast tenderness

  • Gastrointestinal issues

    Common Questions

What are side effects of Spironolactone?
Most people tolerate spironolactone well. There are some reported side effects such as drowsiness, diarrhea and abdominal cramping, nausea and vomiting, high potassium levels, leg cramps, headaches, dizziness, itching, and irregular menstrual cycles.

Mild side effects may disappear within a few days or weeks. However, if your condition is more severe, please reach out to your Modern Age clinician.
What does research say about Spironolactone?
Spironolactone has been proven to be a safe and effective treatment for female pattern hair loss. A 2015 study found that almost 75% of participants with female pattern hair loss noticed an improvement in their hair loss after taking spironolactone.

In addition, a 2017 study noted that a combination of spironolactone and minoxidil had significant benefits in terms of reduced shedding and improved thickness.
How should I choose between Spironolactone and other hair loss treatments like PRP?
PRP involves a scalp injection of a concentrated sample of your own plasma. Promising research shows it to be effective, but it is not as well documented as spironolactone. It is typically recommended for people who have tried an oral option like spironolactone and haven’t seen the results that they’re looking to achieve.

The best way to know which option is best for you is to book a virtual consultation with a clinician at Modern Age who can give you personalized guidance based on your needs and goals. We're always here to help.
