The Root Causes of Hair Loss

      |  Mar 22, 2023

Hair Loss is one of the first experiences most of us have with getting older. In fact, Nearly 50% of women and more than 80% of men experience significant hair loss during their lifetime. While losing your hair is a physical change, it can have emotional impacts and make you feel less like yourself. If you want to do something about your hair loss, it’s important to understand why you might be losing your hair so that you can find a solution that’s right for you.

    What causes hair loss?

There are 3 root causes of  hair loss:

    1. Hormones: Hormones like testosterone and byproducts of testosterone can, in excess, cause hair loss in men and women.

    2. Inflammation: This one isn’t talked about enough, but inflammation is essentially the over-activation of our immune system. It can be caused by a variety of reasons including food products, the environment, and stress. It’s becoming more and more common as we see changes to our environment and added stress to our lives. This leads to over-activation of our immune system which can lead to hair follicles being attacked and resulting in hair loss.

    3. Nutritional Deficiencies: This isn’t necessarily a primary cause of hair loss for people living in the United States, but can be a contributor. Certain nutrients and protein are important for hair growth that can be deficient in some people and lead to hair loss. Making sure that people have enough key vitamins and proteins to have strong and healthy hair.

What can be done about hair loss?

The approach to tackling hair loss optimally really depends on the individual. While the three root causes are simple, you can have multiple issues in each of these areas that require a tailored approach. I think it’s really important to work with a provider that can understand your situation, do the necessary testing and create a plan for you.

The good news is, once you understand the root cause of your hair loss, there are many tools we have at our disposal to address hair loss. Here are a few that we offer at Modern Age:

    1. Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections: This is an in-office treatment that uses your own blood plasma to stimulate hair growth. There are growth factors in blood plasma that trigger cell reproduction and promote hair growth when injected into the scalp.

    2. Prescription Medication: Spironolactone and Finasteride and commonly prescribed to slow the productions of hormones like testosterone that cause hair loss in excess.

    3. Supplements: Biotin is a key vitamin that supports follicle health. There are many biotin supplements that can be taken orally or via an IV drip for faster absorption.

    4. Topical treatments: A common treatment is Minoxidil foam (known popularly by the brand name Rogaine), but there are also serums that use plant-based ingredients like Ashwagandha to support hair growth.
