    Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are signs of aging that appear on the skin as a result of repeated facial expressions, sun exposure, and other environmental factors. Fine lines are smaller, less noticeable wrinkles that form around the eyes, mouth, and forehead, while wrinkles are deeper creases in the skin that may be visible even when the face is relaxed.

What causes fine lines and wrinkles?

Fine lines and wrinkles are primarily caused by aging and exposure to environmental factors such as sun, wind, and pollution. The natural aging process leads to a decrease in collagen and elastin, which are the proteins that give skin its firmness and elasticity.

Questions about Fine Lines & Wrinkles

What’s the difference between fine lines and wrinkles?
Fine lines are small creases that are close to the surface of your skin and may appear in areas where you make repetitive movements from smiling, squinting, etc.  Wrinkles penetrate deeper into the skin and can be caused by changes to our skin from the natural aging process as well as external factors, like environmental damage.
Can I do anything to prevent fine lines from getting worse? What about wrinkles?
Yes - there is a lot that you can do to prevent fine lines and wrinkles from getting worse. Topical retinol can help - there are over-the-counter products like this one from SkinMedica or prescriptions like Tretinoin that have higher concentrations. Retinol, is a form of vitamin A, which helps to exfoliate skin and create collagen which contributes to skin health. Botox is another effective treatment for wrinkles. Botox blocks the signals that cause facial muscles to tense up therefore preventing deeper fine lines or wrinkles.
What is the underlying cause of wrinkles?
Wrinkles are caused when the epidermis becomes thin or is otherwise weakened.  This can be caused by intrinsic aging factors, such as the natural decrease in collagen and elastin production as we get older, and environmental factors like UV radiation from the sun.
Will botox actually prevent wrinkles from forming?
Yes - Neuromodulators, like botox, block signals from the nerves to the muscles, which allows the facial muscles to relax. By relaxing the muscles, it helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and prevent new ones from showing up.
Are there any simple things I can do to prevent wrinkles?
Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen year round, avoiding smoking, and adding a retinoid to your skincare routine have all been shown to help prevent wrinkles.
Why should I come to Modern Age vs my dermatologist for help for my wrinkles?
Board certified clinicians at Modern Age can provide you with a comprehensive, whole-bodyplan to address your skin health goals that incorporates treatments you may not find at your dermatologist. We consider the full spectrum of contributors to skin health, and don’t just limit ourselves to treating the skin itself.  For example, hormone health is closely tied to skin health but hormone levels and these treatments are not typically administered by a dermatologist.
How are my wrinkles and my hormones related?
Hormonal changes that occur with aging, particularly the decline in estrogen levels during menopause are closely linked to skin aging.  Estrogen deficiency contributes to the thinning of the skin and a stark decline in collagen production, both of which contribute to the formation of wrinkles.  A Modern Age clinician can discuss whether hormone replacement therapy is right for you to address skin and other aging related concerns.
Where should I start to get help with my wrinkles?
We recommend booking a complimentary 15-minute skin consultation with a board certified Modern Age clinician to discuss your skin health goals and develop a personalized treatment plan.

More About Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of aging, but they can have a significant impact on our confidence and overall appearance. At Modern Age, we understand the importance of addressing these concerns, and we offer a range of treatments and therapies to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Fine lines are small creases that are close to the surface of your skin and may appear in areas where you make repetitive movements from smiling, squinting, frowning and more. Wrinkles penetrate deeper into the skin and can be caused by changes to our skin from the natural aging process as well as external factors, like environmental damage. Early in life, when our skin has the fewest lines and wrinkles, components like collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans are naturally abundant - keeping it firm, elastic and hydrated. As we get older, natural production of these components declines causing the skin to become more susceptible to damage. External factors like sun-exposure and tobacco use further accelerate these processes and contribute to the formation of deep wrinkles. Genetics plays only a small role in your likelihood to get wrinkles and prevention is the key to delaying their onset.

Wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen year-round is a simple and effective way to prevent wrinkles caused by sun damage.  Avoiding smoking is also key in prevention as cigarette smoke accelerates skin aging. A diet that is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory foods can help to protect skin from damage. Adding a topical retinoid (vitamin A), such as Tretinoin or Adapalene, to your skin care routine is also shown to be effective at renewing epidermal cells. Neuromodulators, like Botox™ and other brands of wrinkle relaxers, are a popular treatment for minimizing existing wrinkles. It works by blocking the signals that cause facial muscles to tense up during certain expressions, like furrowing the brow. By relaxing the muscles, you can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and prevent new ones. A Modern Age board certified clinician can develop a personalized plan to treat your fine lines and wrinkles during a complimentary 15 minute consultation.
