    Perimenopause: What to Expect

Menopause is typically experienced by women between the ages of 40 and 58, with the average age being 51. Menopause is defined by the absence of a menstrual period, without other underlying causes, for 12 consecutive months. While menopause is a natural part of aging, the symptoms that accompany it can be disruptive to your daily life.

In addition to the period of menopause itself, women also often typically experience pre-menopausal symptoms leading up to menopause itself. These symptoms are part of perimenopause. Understanding what to expect from the perimenopause period can help you be on the lookout for these symptoms, and help prepare you for this life adjustment.

    Questions about perimenopause

    When does perimenopause start?
Perimenopause is the result of the ovaries producing less estrogen as the body ages. Before this, the body goes through a period called premenopause, where the hormones may begin to fluctuate, but no symptoms occur.
Once symptoms begin to occur, you have entered perimenopause. The symptoms of perimenopause can actually start up to a decade before the body begins menopause, but typically begin about four years before menopause. This means that it can be hard to predict when these symptoms may occur, but a general idea isanywhere in your 30s to 40s, you may experience some symptoms of perimenopause.
    What are perimenopause symptoms?
There are several symptoms of menopause that can also be present in perimenopause. Signs and symptoms that indicate perimenopause include:
  • Hot Flashes: One of the most well-known symptoms of menopause is hot flashes. This sudden feeling of being overly hot regardless of the environment may also be accompanied by sweating and flushing of the skin. Some people find hot flashes to be disruptive and embarrassing because they occur suddenly.

  • Irregular Periods: While not every person is the same, and many people’s periods may fluctuate normally, irregular periods are characterized by more drastic changes in flow or skipped months where no period is present. Birth control, stress, and diet can also all affect the regularity of periods, so on its own, this is not necessarily a sign of perimenopause. But if accompanied by other common signs, irregular periods could indicate perimenopause.

  • Vaginal Dryness: As the body ages, vaginal walls can become thinner, and a loss of estrogen can also decrease the amount of lubricant that the vagina naturally produces. This can lead to vaginal dryness and overall discomfort or pain during intercourse.

  • Changes in Urination: A common sign is the need to urinate more frequently or urgently.

  • Changes in Sleep Patterns: People undergoing perimenopause may notice a change in sleep patterns, such as insomnia or restlessness.

  • Weight Gain: As the body adjusts to differing hormone levels, you may experience fluctuations in your weight. You may also notice that the distribution of fat in your body shifts, with more fat being concentrated around the midsection.

  • What’s the difference between perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause?
Perimenopause is the phase leading up to menopause when hormone levels are fluctuating and trending down. Menopause is defined as going one year without a menstrual cycle and postmenopause is the period after that 12 months. Postmenopause is the phase women remain in for the rest of their lives.
    How long does perimenopause last?
Perimenopause can last from four to ten years. Symptoms may vary in severity during that time, and not all symptoms may be present for the entirety of perimenopause. Once you enter menopause, meaning you have had no periods for 12 consecutive months, then symptoms should cease.
Can anything be done for perimenopause symptoms?
While the symptoms of perimenopause are related to the natural process of the body aging, there are some ways to alleviate or lessen some of the symptoms. Before addressing symptoms, it is important to assess that nothing else is occurring to cause the symptoms. Talking to your doctor about any concerning symptoms is also an essential first step. Additionally, taking an aging wellness assessment may be helpful for figuring out any other potential age-related concerns.
For symptoms, there may be a few options for treatment or alleviation. For vaginal dryness, vaginal moisturizers may be helpful in addition to using lubrication during intercourse. For sleep changes, your doctor may suggest sleep aids. For a broader approach to managing symptoms, hormone replacement therapy is one of the most widely recognized treatments for perimenopausal symptoms caused by fluctuating estrogen levels. Hormone replacement therapy can help with a variety of perimenopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, weight gain, low energy, brain fog, loss of libido, and more.
How do I get started with Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?
Getting started with HRT is easy. Sign up for a consultation and blood draw with us and meet with a clinician to find out if HRT is a good fit given your medical history and current goals.
Is HRT the only thing that will help with my symptoms?
HRT is not the only thing that can help with menopausal symptoms. Menopause can be managed, depending on the severity of symptoms with diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes. We would recommend meeting with one of our clinicians to find out what might make sense for you.
Is Menopause the cause of an increased chance of cardiovascular disease?
Menopause is a contributing factor to women’s increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Doctors believe that reduced estrogen along with other symptoms of aging contribute to this increased risk.
Are menopause and low sex drive related?
Menopause can be a major factor in a reduced sex drive. Sexual wellness for older women is a taboo topic but at Modern Age we believe it's important to discuss this experience. We offer a variety of treatments and medicines that can help manage symptoms related to low sex drive to help make sex enjoyable again as you age.

Such a delightful experience. The space is absolutely gorgeous and serene. My specialist made me feel completely comfortable throughout my first Botox treatment. I felt great when I walked out and am excited to come back for a hormone panel and future skin treatments.
